A More Contemporary Quilt

I actually started this quilt about a year ago. This one was a kit I had purchased about 4 years ago, and when my granddaughter asked me for a quilt, I went through my projects and thought this one would be perfect for her. However, it did not take me long to determine I was short of fabric - hate when this happens - and so I had to hunt down the now not so available fabrics on the web and wait for them to come in to see if they matched. By the time all this was sorted out, this project did not get into full swing until around April. To start, things were quite simple - all I did was sew a bunch of strips together! (Yes, simple, but I get bored easily, so it took me a while.) I actually completed this one before I started on my "Chain of Fools" quilt, but did not think about blogging my own progress until later.

Once my strip piecing was completed, I used a template to cut them diagonally into blocks, and this left a lot of wasted material. I cut them all into triangles, when possible, and other various sizes, as the scraps allowed. I knew there would be enough scraps to make another quilt, so I saved everything until I figured out what I wanted to do.

In the meantime, I pieced the blocks together - with care!!! (Everything was cut on the bias, so it was too easy to stretch them.) The finished quilt pattern was square, and I wanted to make it longer, so I took some of those left-over pieces and created an additional border at the top and bottom.

Since the patterns in this quilt were so busy, I opted for an edge to edge pattern that reminded me of ocean waves. (And, quite honestly, it is hard to fit my own quilts into my schedule, let alone try to do them as a custom!)

As I was sewing the binding on this one,  I found a triangular pattern in a magazine that I could use with the triangular scrap pieces I had reserved, so I laid out my them out accordingly, and then sewed them together. There were enough scraps leftover to make a 45 X 61" quilt, and I still have scraps - I'll have yet to figure out what to do with the rest of them.

April Pantographs

Isn't it wonderful to see Spring has finally arrived, along with some much needed rain?!! I have been out doing some planting and tending to the needs of my perennial garden. It seems all my bulbs were in need of dividing, and fortunately, I have friends who need some! Well, onto those quilts.....

First, a couple of quilts with feather edge to edge patterns. The first one is a black floral pinwheel, that works really well with an overall feather design.
















Next is a log cabin variety, which always seems to look good with feathers.



























































Then an applique with an all over pattern stitched into it. I have not done this before, typically doing custom work for applique, but edge to edge seems to work on this one. I think it's because the applique patterns are fairly large. Since it has Hawaiian floral applique, a simple floral pattern was used.

This last one is also a type of log cabin, but with a musical theme, so a musical note pattern was chosen.

















































The back of the quilt was also pieced, and the notes stitched in may be better seen here.

It seems I have been doing at lot of edge to edge quilting lately. I do enjoy them because they give me a break from the intensity of the work on custom quilts. Here are some of the most recent ones:

This first quilt has a pattern called windy day which seems to give movement to those pinwheels.

The next quilt is the same quilt as the first, but with the colors in the negative space reversed. This edge to edge pattern is quite swirly!

This next quilt is a handkerchief quilt - I have not seen one of these before, and found it very unique. This one has an all over stipple pattern.

This Daisy Chain quilt also has an all over feather pattern.

And, last one for this blog, a charity quilt with a floral pattern quilted in.

I know it's been a while since I have updated my blog, but Dale's recovery from knee replacement surgery has been keeping me extra busy. I hope you are all doing well!

A Feathered Forget Me Not and Some Edge to Edge

Quilts from the Heart of the Giver

I thought I would get this out sooner, but, alas, one thing after another it seems - recovering from the flue, catching up with all those undone things that I put off until after Christmas, getting the decorations down and put away, and then, just to add to the fun, car issues! Life is always an adventure, and all the downs help us to be so much more appreciative of the ups!

It is always such a joy to me to see what some of you put so much time, money, and effort into, and then give to a loved one. This type of gift says so much about the heart of the giver, and you all have such generous and giving hearts!

The last of my "must be done for Christmas" quilts was this Pam Bono design, called "Forget Me Not". If you like feathers, this one has just a few. I knew I would have to break down those large while areas somehow, and decided to curl the feathers around the bow and ribbon. I first drew semi-circles where I wanted the curls to be, then worked out how I wanted to connect them. I included some swirls to add a little interest and fill in some of the odd
spaces.

I continued this theme in the large periwinkle and white center triangles, using a feather curved to the triangle, with some ribbons and swirls. For the dark green and navy triangles, a crosshatch pattern was used to create a trellis look.

The pansies, ribbons, and leaves were simply given their natural character. The narrow borders received a ribbon look, and the navy area around the pansies were also feathered.

A couple of other gifts from the heart included some edge to edge quilts. This first one is called "Evening Mist," and is quilted with an all over feather pattern.

This cute and colorful children's quilt has a teddy bear all over pattern.

And this wild, colorful block quilt has and all over star pattern. This one is a two-sided quilt, with bold colors on one side and more pastel blocks on the other.

Left This Out!

What can I say - I was in such a hurry with my last post that I left this out - now you know how feeble my mind is!

This one was quilted with a feather panto using red thread - sounds a bit bold, but the end look of it is fabulous. Sometimes dramatic is the way to go!

Some Charity Edge to Edge

Happy August!


Summers often seem so busy with vacations, family visits, and other stuff, and I hope you have all been enjoying some special times.


I have had these charity quilts from LNCQ (League of Northern Colorado Quilters) sitting in my closet since February, and I finally had a gap in my schedule to get them quilted. A big thank you and many blessings to those of you who contributed time and materials to make them!

These charity quilts give me a chance to show you some more edge to edge quilting patterns. This first one is quilted with a flower pattern, which gives some life and definition to this simple quilt.















This next quilt looks like it will most likely end up with a young girl, so to keep the fun happy look, I quilted in a butterfly pattern.

This one looks more like a young boys quilt, so it has an owl pattern quilted in.

A panel quilt of a gnome village has a "Sunny Day" quilted pattern.

It is hard to say to whom this pinwheel block quilt might be blessed with, so it received some simple quilted feathers that would be age and gender neutral.

And finally, this really happy little quilt, and the smiley faces just said bubbles to me.

 I am so relieved to be able to finally get these out of my closet, and I am sure the charities these will go to will be anxious to receive them!
